Specialty Cones

Sitka Spruce
Human uses of Sitka spruce cones primarily involve traditional medicine, survival food, and unique practical applications:
- Medicinal Tea: Indigenous groups brew young cones into a tea to treat colds and sore throats; rich in Vitamin C to help fight infections.
- Edible Resource: Immature female cones can be roasted; the central portion becomes sweet and syrupy when cooked.
- Topical Treatments: Cones have been used in steam baths to relieve rheumatism and pain.
Jeffrey Pine
"Gentle Jeffrey." Much more user-friendly than the Coulter pine, playing a unique role in both history and science.
- Scientific "Zero Point": Resin used as the "zero point" for the octane rating scale of gasoline.
- Traditional Food: Indigenous groups ground the large seeds into a nutrient-dense "nut butter" (lopa).
- Crafts: Known for inward-pointing barbs that won't prick hands, making them ideal for nature crafts and bird feeders.

Gray Pine (Angry Bird)
The Gray Pine or Foothill Pine (Pinus sabiniana) is famous for being one of the heaviest and most formidable pine cones in the world. Native to the foothills surrounding California’s Central Valley and parts of Southern Oregon, these cones provide incredible scale for high-end displays.
